Nicholas Hastings lives in Melbourne. In 1983 he lived in the Dandenong Ranges, close to where the Ash Wednesday bush fires occurred. In 2009 he lived in the Yarra Valley, close to the Black Saturday fires, and in 2010 he was an expert witness at the Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission. He and his family were not personally involved in the fire tragedies. His awareness of and concern for the many conflicting issues of lifestyle and fire safety inspired him to write A Tree Too Far.
